The defender is one of eight new signings at Newcastle United this summer.
The Scotland international is one of eight new faces at St James' Park this summer after completing a move from Blackburn Rovers.
The Magpies had to wait to get their man as Rovers made them endure a long, drawn out affair before finally selling the player.
Part of their decision to sell was also down to the player himself, after he made it obvious he wanted to make the move.
And he says that the opportunity to work with a manager such as Benitez played a large part in his decision.
“The opportunity to work with a manager like Rafa Benitez does not come along very often. It’s one I am glad I had the chance to take,” he told the Chronicle.
It now remains to be seen what role Hanley has to play in the Newcastle team this season.
The centre of defence has long been an issue for the Magpies, with them lacking both strength in depth and quality in that position for several years.
However, Benitez now has several options available to him after a busy summer and it will be interesting to see if Hanley is a regular starter from the outset.
