The game wasn't only there to celebrate Rooney's career with United so far, as it also gave the two Premier League sides a great chance to build up for the upcoming league season.
United had new signings Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic on show, whilst new Everton manager tested a 5-3-2 system, but the game ended in a goalless draw.
Everton's Mason Holgate applauds Manchester United's Wayne Rooney as he is is substituted
In a drab game, there was one standout player for Everton - defender Mason Holgate. The 19-year-old joined the Toffees from Barnsley last summer, following the same path as fellow defender John Stones.
After no appearances last season, Holgate was given a chance to shine by Koeman against United - and he didn't disappoint his manager or the Everton fans.
Everton supporters took to Twitter during and after the game to praise Holgate's performance, with many noting just how well he coped with United's star striker Ibrahimovic.
Some even suggested that he could replace Stones if the England international is sold this summer, and hailed him for a man of the match display...
