Charlton Athletic have agreed a deal to sign Wigan Athletic defender Jason Pearce, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Wigan are willing to let Pearce move on as he is down the pecking order in Gary Caldwell's plans as the Latics prepare for life back in the Championship.

Pearce joined Wigan from Leeds United in January 2015, but could not prevent the club from suffering relegation to the Championship.

The 28-year-old played a key role in helping Wigan win promotion from League One last season, but he was set to find his first-team chances limited this season.

New Charlton boss Russell Slade has targeted Pearce as he looks to bring in an experienced central defender to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season.

Pearce has made 381 appearances in his career and Slade sees him as a key addition to his young squad as he looks to build a side capable of winning promotion back to the Championship.

Pearce is expected to go straight into the Charlton squad for their League One opener against Bury this weekend.
