The Spaniard named Jamaal Lascelles as the club's captain on Thursday.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Rafa Benitez says he has told the Newcastle’s players they must all show their character and leadership qualities despite Jamaal Lascelles being named captain.
Lascelles was named as the club’s official captain on Thursday after wearing the armband for all five of their pre-season games so far.
It marks an impressive rise from the central defender, who was struggling for game time at the club before coming a regular under Benitez in the second half of last season.

However, while he will wear the armband, Benitez says he has told the rest of the squad to show their character and leadership qualities across the season.
"We have a few players now in the squad who have the character to be captain, but Jamaal has proven himself to be a leader,” he told the club’s official website.
"I am pleased that Jamaal will be our captain, but I have also said to other players that they must too show their character, strength and leadership qualities to support the team."

It now remains to be seen if Lascelles will prove to be the right appointment as Newcastle captain.
He has certainly shown his qualities so far this year, with his attitude towards the end of last season one the Magpies faithful were more than appreciative of.
That is clearly something Benitez has picked up on and he will be hoping that Lascelles proves to be the perfect choice for the role moving forward.
