Everton manager Ronald Koeman has criticised his side’s performance in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United, speaking to BT Sport.

The Blues travelled to Old Trafford to take on United for Wayne Rooney’s testimonial on Wednesday.

While the game was a friendly on paper, neither side took it as one as they both named strong starting line ups for the clash.

It proved to be something of a boring affair though, with just a handful of clear-cut chances created by the two sides.

The defences were certainly the winners on the evening, but Ronald Koeman was not happy with how his side performed when they had the ball.

“I expected better quality on the ball,” he told BT Sport.

“I think we had very good organisation but our ball possession was not at a level we expect. You need to be more confident if you play Manchester United. We need to play better.”

Koeman will now be hoping that his side can show some improvement when they take on Espanyol at the weekend.

They have not had a terrible pre-season by any means but it has been evident that it will take some time before he can fully implement his style at the club.

Of course much is likely to rest on how many new signings he can add to his current squad, and he will be keen to get more in before the end of the transfer window after securing just two so far.
