According to The Sun, Southampton are lining up a move to sign Anderlecht midfielder Steven Defour in a £6m deal this month.

The Saints may have lost star midfielder Victor Wanyama to Premier League rivals Tottenham, but they did sign talented young Dane Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Bayern Munich – and new manager Claude Puel appears to want more additions in midfield.

Puel looks set to use a diamond in midfield, meaning he may want more options to compete with the likes of Jordy Clasie, Steven Davis, Oriol Romeu and Hojbjerg, with depth needed for a formation so reliant on central midfielders.

Now, The Sun report that Southampton are keen on Anderlecht's Steven Defour, who is believed to want a summer move away from the Belgian side.

Defour, 28, was highly regarded during his time at Standard Liege, but whilst he saw fellow midfielders Marouane Fellaini and Axel Witsel earn big moves away, Defour had to wait until 2011 to get his move to Porto, with injuries stalling his career.

Now back in Belgium with Anderlecht, Defour is believed to want a summer move away having been harangued by the club's supporters. Defour's history with rival club Standard Liege hasn't gone down well with Anderlecht fans, and the abuse directed at him by his own fans appears to have taken its toll.

With 46 caps for Belgium, Defour has plenty of experience at 28, and Southampton are believed to want him in a £6m deal as the midfielder pushes for a move.

Defour is clearly unhappy with Anderlecht right now, and Southampton could offer him the perfect escape route, where central midfielders could be key under new manager Puel.
