According to French newspaper La Provence, Marseille have held discussions with Newcastle United midfielder Henri Saivet about a move.

The midfielder only arrived at St James Park in January in a £5 million move from Bordeaux.

He struggled to impress though, making just four appearances for both Steve McLaren and later Rafa Benitez as there were concerns that the hadn’t adapted to the pace of the Premier League.

He has featured under the Spaniard in pre-season so far, but all suggestions have been that the club were happy to let him leave should an offer come in.

And it appears that an offer may be on the cards, with La Provence reporting that Marseille may be interested in a move.

According to them, Marseille’s Head of Recruitment Jean-Philippe Durand and Sporting Director Gunter Jacob have held talks with Saivet’s representatives.

It now remains to be seen if they will make an offer to Newcastle and whether the Magpies will be willing to sell.

They are well stocked when it comes to central midfielders at present, with Mo Diame’s arrival set to add to their options, and that could see them sanction an exit for Saivet.
