According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal sent scouts to watch West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans on Monday.

The Gunners are on the hunt for a new centre back this summer after Per Mertesacker picked up an injury in pre-season.

He has been ruled out for up to five months, leaving Arsene Wenger short on options, especially with Laurent Koscielny enjoying an extended break after Euro 2016.

Several names have been suggested as potential targets as a result, with Evans a surprise name among them.

And according to the Daily Mail, the interest is genuine as the Gunners sent scouts to watch the Republic of Ireland international in action on Monday, where he played the first half of a 2-1 defeat to Torquay.

It now remains to be seen whether they make a firm offer for his services before the end of the transfer window.

A move for Evans would be surprising to say the least given the other names they have been linked with.

However, he does have Premier League and Champions League experience, and was highly rated by Sir Alex Ferguson during his time at Manchester United.

There is every chance that those three aspects are what Wenger is considering at this moment in time.
