Former Arsenal defender Lauren has told the London Evening Standard that they do not need to sign Riyad Mahrez.

Mahrez was the star of the show in the Premier League last season as he played a major role in Leicester City’s Premier League title winning campaign.

Indeed, his displays were of such a high level that he was awarded the PFA Player of the Year at the end of the season.

His performances did not go unnoticed, with several big European sides having been linked with a potential move this summer.

Arsenal had emerged as a contender for his signature over the last month, but Lauren has insisted that he is not needed at the Emirates.

“Mahrez is not needed at Arsenal,” he told the London Evening Standard.

“He is a very good player, but how many similar players in terms of technically proficient, creative midfielders and wide men do Arsenal have already?”

It is hard to disagree with Lauren’s views about a potential move for Mahrez this summer.

While there is no denying he would be a star signing, it would be surprising given that their squad is already well stocked when it comes to attacking midfielders.

Arsene Wenger’s side would be wiser to focus on the areas of their team that truly need improving, such as a striker, and perhaps use the funds for Mahrez to secure one.
