Rangers signed Gilks on a two-year contract on a free transfer in the month of June, as announced on the club’s official website.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper was on the books of Burnley for two years before leaving the Clarets at the end of last season.
The Scotsman failed to make a single league appearance for the Clarets during his time at Turf Moor.
Heaton, who is 30 years of age, played with Gilks at Burnley, and he has spoken highly of the Rangers summer signing.
“I have worked with Gillo for the last two years and he is a fantastic keeper with a wealth of experience,” Heaton told The Glasgow Evening Times.
“He has played over 400 career games and was fantastic for me at Burnley. I know he was disappointed not to play more games but he is delighted to be up here.
"Wes is a fantastic keeper but the department will certainly be healthier for Gillo's arrival. In terms of competition it will be good between them. He is also fantastic around the dressing room.”
Burnley will feature in the Premier League this coming season after getting promoted from the Championship at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
Meanwhile, Rangers will feature in the Scottish Premiership this season after winning the Scottish Championship title with ease during the 2015-16 campaign.
The Gers will be aiming to compete with Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title this season.
