Everton are close to completing a move for Swansea City defender Ashley Williams.

The Wales captain is set to undergo a medical at some point this week after the two sides agreed a £10 million fee for his services, according to Wales Online.

The Welshman was once again a star performer despite the Swans struggled last season and excelled at Euro 2016 with his country this summer.

His departure would be a major blow to Francesco Guidolin’s side, but represents a smart move from Everton.

He is likely being eyed as a potential replacement for John Stones, who looks set to complete a big money move to Manchester City at some point, despite the two sides disagreeing over his asking price.

A direct comparison of the two players from last season shows that Williams is more than capable of replacing the England international.

Of the eight statistical areas that we looked at, he came out on top in seven and only narrowly lost out in one.

On a per game basis he registered more tackles, won more tackles and won more interceptions that Stones.

He also posted more effective clearances and effective headed clearances, as well winning more aerial duels.

Stones narrowly won out when it came to defensive duels, although he surprisingly didn’t match up when it came to passing, an area of the game he excels in.

For that price then Williams represents a superb signing, especially as a potential replacement for Stones.
