According to Sky Sports, Hull City midfielder Mohamed Diame will undergo a medical with Newcastle United today as he closes in on a move to Tyneside.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Newcastle activated the £4.5m release clause in Diame's Hull contract on Monday, and Hull even made a late attempt to offer the midfielder a new contract – but he snubbed that offer.

The Senegalese star hit ten goals for Hull last season, playing a key role as the now-departed Steve Bruce led the Tigers back to the Premier League, with Diame even scoring the winning goal in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield Wednesday with a stunning long-range strike.

It's been a difficult summer for Hull, and they had surely pegged Diame as a key player for their Premier League return having struggled to make new signings. Now though, Diame appears to be following Bruce in leaving the KCOM Stadium.

Sky Sports report that Diame is travelling up to Tyneside, and will undergo a medical with Newcastle today ahead of completing his move to St. James' Park.

Despite the fact that he'd be dropping from the Premier League to the Championship, Diame appears to be keen on a move to join Rafael Benitez's side, and should have his deal wrapped up before Newcastle open their season against Fulham on Friday.

With some question marks over the future of Moussa Sissoko having impressed for France at Euro 2016, Diame looks to be a sensible alternative for Newcastle, with the 29-year-old former West Ham star offering power, drive and a goalscoring threat to Benitez's midfield.

For Hull, it's another blow in what has been a disastrous summer - and seeing a key player trade the Premier League for the Championship has to hurt as Diame closes in on his move to Newcastle.

Do you think Diame will be a good signing for Newcastle?
