Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has suggested to The Chronicle that Daryl Janmaat could remain at the club this season.

Janmaat has been linked with a move away from Newcastle in the summer transfer window.

According to a report in The Sunday People last month, Premier League outfit Watford are interested in signing the Netherlands international defender this summer.

However, Benitez has suggested that the 27-year-old right-back could still remain at St. James’ Park for the 2016-17 campaign.

“It depends on each one,” Benitez told The Chronicle when asked about Janmaat’s future. “Some players we will need them and they have to stay.

“Others we know we can replace them with good players and they can leave. It depends on the player, the position, the offers, a lot of things.

“In the end it depends on us. What I want is players 100% convinced they have to stay here and compete and win. If they cannot they may need a month or two to realise where they are. No rush.”

Janmaat has been on the books of Newcastle since the summer of 2014 and has a contract with the Magpies until June 2020, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

The former Feyenoord right-back scored two goals and created 25 chances in 32 Premier League appearances for Newcastle last season.

The former Heerenveen defender had a pass accuracy of 74% and a shot accuracy of 73%, and won 26 headers, 38 dribbles and 62 tackles.

Newcastle will feature in the Championship this season after getting relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
