Newcastle United are close to announcing the signings of two new players, with both Mohamed Diame and Ciaran Clark having undergone medicals on Tuesday.

The Chronicle say Diame is set to join the Magpies on Wednesday in a deal worth around £4.5 million after the Tyneside club activated the release clause in his Hull City contract.

Hull are thought to have offered Diame a new deal in a last-ditch attempt to convince him to stay, but the 29-year-old is expected to be announced as a Newcastle player in the next 24 hours.

Diame is likely to be one of a pair of imminent new signings, as Sky Sports report that Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark is also undergoing a medical on Tyneside.

The Republic of Ireland defender is expected to complete his move from fellow relegated side Aston Villa for around £5 million after the Magpies triggered yet another release clause in his contract, and the deal could be signed off on Tuesday night.

Clark will become the latest defensive addition for Rafael Benitez, with the Spanish boss having identified the backline as a key area for strengthening.

He might not be the last recruit at the back this summer, however, with the Daily Mail suggesting that Manchester United's young pair Paddy McNair and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson have been discussed as defensive targets.

New United manager Jose Mourinho is thought to be willing to let a host of young talent leave the club, and 21-year-old McNair and 19-year-old Borthwick-Jackson could be amongst those players.

The Mail claims that Benitez has identified the pair, along with Brighton and Hove Albion star Lewis Dunk, as potential further additions over the next few weeks.

The protracted exit saga of Moussa Sissoko could take another turn in the coming days, with the Shields Gazette reporting that Real Madrid are ready to firm up their interest in the midfielder.

Sissoko has emerged as a surprise target for the La Liga giants after they missed out on Paul Pogba, and a line in the Gazette's report suggests that Real will turn their interest into a solid offer in the near future.

Finally, speaking to the Chronicle, Matz Sels reveals he turned down Premier League offers to sign for Newcastle and play under Benitez.

Sels was a reported target of clubs such as Middlesbrough and Southampton, but he revealed that a phone call with the former European Cup-winning manager convinced him that Championship football at Newcastle was the right move for him.
