Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has told The Chronicle that the Magpies fans are living up to what he was told about them before joining the club.

The 24-year-old joined Newcastle from Belgian side Gent earlier this summer.

Some 8,000 supporters turned up to Newcastle's summer open day at St James's Park on Monday, and such passion and commitment is reflective of what Sels was told about the "crazy" fans prior to his arrival on Tyneside.

“It was only a Monday so it was crazy that there were 8,000 or more here," he told The Chronicle.

"I heard in Belgium before I came here that the fans were fantastic and that has been absolutely right."

It remains to be seen how big of a role Sels will given with Newcastle this season.

He played in the 2-2 draw away to Doncaster Rovers last month in a friendly, but the Belgian stopper endured something of a nightmare that night.

Of course, Rafael Benitez still has Tim Krul, Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow at his disposal, though Elliot remains sidelined with cruciate ligament injury.
