FC Augsburg's Alex Manninger during training
Liverpool completed one of the most surprising signings of the transfer window last month when they added goalkeeper Alex Manninger.
Manninger is 39-years-old and only had a brief spell in England as a youngster with Arsenal previously.

Yet Jurgen Klopp felt he would be a valuable member of the squad, and Manninger got the chance to show why last night when he was handed his debut in a pre-season game against Roma.
Manninger's start may have been fast-tracked due to an injury to fellow new boy Loris Karius, and he showed that if needed, he can be called upon.

The Austrian did concede during the 2-1 defeat before being replaced by Simon Mignolet, but he stopped the scoreline from being higher, with a number of important saves.
He is likely to remain back-up to Mignolet for the season opener against Arsenal, but if the Belgian's inconsistency is a problem, Manninger could be a useful addition.

His signing looks like a wise move with Karius out injured, and while tougher tests will be around the corner, the early signs are promising.

3. That guy who played as a striker
4. Just leave the net empty
Manninger's kept us in the game. Unconvincing defence thus far. #Lfc— Andy Cause (@AndyCause) August 2, 2016
