BBC pundit and former Premier League star Chris Sutton has explained how the Arsenal board and Arsene Wenger have let the fans down again this summer, when speaking on the BBC's Radio Five Live.

The Gunners have failed to make any blockbuster statement signings during the current transfer window, while their competitors are significantly strengthening their squads.

Sutton believes that Arsenal have showed limited ambition and that they owe it to their fans to spend big.

"I just worry about Arsenal again this season," he said. "They have shown absolutely no intent. I think the board and Wenger are letting the fans down."

Wenger has already brought in Granit Xhaka, Rob Holding and Takuma Asano, although Arsenal fans were hoping for additions of a more world-class nature.

They have never replaced Robin van Persie since he left in 2012, yet they have passed up numerous opportunities to sign top quality strikers, including Gonzalo Higuain for £32 million in 2013, because they refused to pay the required price.

Sutton told BBC Radio Five Live how there seems to be no direction or conviction at the club.

"I just don't know where Arsenal are going, I really don't," he added. "If I was an Arsenal fan I would be desperately disappointed. They have said they are not going to spend. The board are happy. Champions League football every year, they get their money, and they have got a manager who can chose when he leaves."

As many Gunners fans feared, their side's second place finish in the Premier League last term seems to have papered over the cracks, and the club's need to spend has been obscured by their so-called improvement in finishing ahead of 18 other teams.

In actual fact, their points return of 71 was their lowest tally during the last four seasons, so there is a case to be made that they have actually regressed.

Sutton finished off his damning verdict on Arsenal's hopes with his view on when the Gunners can expect to win the league again.

"Until Wenger goes, Arsenal won't win the Premier League," he said.
