According to a report from the London Evening Standard, Mario Gomez remains an option for West Ham United this summer with his current club Fiorentina prepared to sell him for £7million.

The Germany international may be 31 but his ability in front of goal is undeniable, with 277 club goals in 472 appearances and 29 strikes in 68 games for his country.

Gomez showed last season for Besiktas – where he scored 28 goals in 41 games – and for Germany at Euro 2016 that he still has quality in abundance and the prospect of him playing in front of Dimitri Payet would be a tantalising one for West Ham fans.

He has long been linked with a move to the Hammers yet the claim that he could be signed for as little as £7million should not be ignored.

West Ham have failed with some big-money bids for world-class strikers already this summer, but that does not mean they should admit defeat.

For a fraction of the price of some of their other alleged targets the Hammers could bring in an experienced international that would score regularly at the Olympic Stadium.

They pulled off a coup with Payet last summer and £7million for Gomez would be in the same bracket if he played to his full potential.
