Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has told ESPN FC that West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans would be a good signing for Arsenal.

According to The Mirror, the Gunners are interested in signing the former Manchester United defender in the summer transfer window.

It has been reported by the British newspaper that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is planning a £15 million move for Evans.

The North London outfit are claimed to be looking for a centre-back following the long-term injury suffered by Per Mertesacker in pre-season.

According to The Independent, Arsenal are also interested in signing 24-year-old centre-back Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia this summer.

Liverpool legend Nicol believes that Evans would be a better signing than Mustafi for the North London outfit.

“I am not a fan of Gabriel,” the former Scotland international defender told ESPN FC. “I think he has got a mistake in him all day long everyday.

“If it is Mustafa for 30 million or Jonny Evans for 18, I am taking Jonny Evans. 28 years old, experienced in the Premier League, had a fantastic season last year with West Brom.

“You know what you are getting from Jonny Evans, and that is good solid defending.”
