The Spaniard has started several of Everton's pre-season games as a striker under Ronald Koeman.

Everton legend Graeme Sharp has told the Liverpool Echo he would be surprised if Gerard Deulofeu starts up front for the Blues next season.

Manager Ronald Koeman has used the Spanish winger in a central role throughout pre-season so far.

It has proved to be a smart move from the Dutchman, with Deulofeu bagging several goals and generally impressing with his quick adaptation to the role.

Indeed, he has impressed to such an extent that some Blues fans have begun to question whether he could be partnered alongside Romelu Lukaku next season.

But Sharp says he would be surprised if that were to happen.

“I think Gerard has done really, really well in that position,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“But if you asked me the question ‘Do you see Gerard Deulofeu playing in that position come the Premier League season?’ I’d be surprised if he did do.”

Whether Deulofeu ends up playing up front next season is likely to rest on the work that Koeman can do in the summer transfer window.

It has been reported that one of his targets is to bring a striker to Goodison Park this summer, with him reportedly hoping to play someone alongside Lukaku.

Should he not be able to find such a player though, it would not be surprising to see Deulofeu given the chance based on the performances he has already put in during pre-season.
