Jonjo Shelvey was the last man to hold the position permanently after being handed it by former manager Steve McClaren.

However, Benitez dropped the midfielder from his team towards the end of last season and he looks set to lose the armband as a result.
Lascelles has been handed the role throughout pre-season, taking up the responsibility in all of their five friendlies so far.

He now looks certain to wear it when they take on Fulham in their opening game of the season on Friday evening.
And according to the Chronicle, Rafa Benitez has been keeping a keen eye on the 22-year-old throughout the summer, purposefully asking him tough questions to test if he can handle the responsibility of the role.
He has clearly been impressed, and is now close to handing Lascelles the role on a full time basis to cap off an impressive rise for him at the club in 2016.
