HITC Sport understands Barnsley set to sign non-league defender.
Barnsley have agreed a deal to sign Torquay United defender Angus MacDonald, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
MacDonald's future at Torquay has been the subject of speculation for several weeks with the former England youth international attracting interest from a number of clubs.
The 23-year-old only signed a new deal at Torquay earlier this summer, but the Gulls agreed not to stand in his way if a suitable offer from a higher level club made their interest known, and now Barnsley have come in and offered the player the chance to move to the Championship.
Torquay are resigned to losing the former Reading youngster and he was left out of the side in last week's friendly against Bath with the club in talks with Barnsley
Barnsley have been trailing MacDonald in pre-season and they have now stepped up their efforts to sign the central defender ahead of the new Championship season starting this weekend.
Tykes boss Paul Heckingbottom has been busy in the transfer market so far this summer and he sees MacDonald as a key addition to his plans as they prepare for life back in the Championship.
