The Magpies have reportedly triggered the Hull City midfielder's £4.5 million release clause.

Newcastle United have been more active than many thus far in the summer transfer market, and it appears they could be closing on another signing as multiple outlets including the Daily Mail report that they have triggered a release clause for Hull City midfielder Mohamed Diame.

The Magpies have already signed seven players so far since their relegation to the Championship, and the man who was Hull's play-off final hero back in May looks set to become their eighth.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have activated a release clause worth just £4.5 million in the contract of the 29-year-old, and the midfielder has turned down the offer of a new contract at the KC Stadium, seemingly intent instead on making the move to Tyneside.

For Newcastle, the move would seem to represent a real coup; for a start, it would bring the prestige of having another player reject the chance to play in the Premier League to instead drop down to the Championship at St. James' Park.

Not only that, but in the current transfer market £4.5 million surely represents an absolute steal for a player with the quality of Diame.

That is particularly the case given that the Magpies ultimately look likely to get in excess of £25 million for wantaway central midfielder Moussa Sissoko, and though Diame is perhaps not quite on the level of the France international, getting a top-class Championship replacement for a quarter of the price is undoubtedly excellent business.

Reacting on Twitter to the reports, Newcastle fans hailed their manager Rafael Benitez for another stellar piece of business and revelled in the squad that the Spaniard is putting together this summer.
