Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has told SkySports he intends to give opportunities to Polish teenager Krystian Bielik this season.

Bielik has been in action for the Gunners in pre-season in America, featuring at centre-back.

He signed for Arsenal in early 2015 from Legia Warsaw, and has been in the under-21 side since.

A defensive midfielder by trade, his most likely chance for the Gunners is likely to come in defence, where he has featured for the under-21s ever since joining.

Now Wenger believes the time is ready for Bielik to make the step up, and wants to give him a chance in the first half of the season.

He said: "Many times this is a position for experienced players because you pay for every mistake with a goal in this position, in the Premier League.

"What I have try to do with him this season is to work on his positional play and improve him, and give him some games. If in December, he is not ready, we will try and get him to play somewhere."

The problem for Arsene Wenger is the context his comments come in, with senior defender Per Mertesacker picking up an injury last week which will rule him out for five months of the season.

There is also a big discontent among fans at Arsenal's spending over the past two seasons, and there is a fear, rightly or wrongly, that Bielik could be used to plug the gap.
