Manchester United are lacking top quality in central defence.
Manchester United have had a transfer window to remember for all the right reasons so far, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all arriving and Paul Pogba tipped to become the fourth new addition at Old Trafford in due course.
But even if the Frenchman does return to United four years after his much publicised departure, United manager Jose Mourinho still has work to do if he wants the perfect squad for next season.
United’s central defensive options are plentiful in number but less so in quality, with Marcos Rojo disappointing more often than not and Phil Jones failing – at least thus far – to fulfil his potential.
Injuries have also played a big part for the former Blackburn Rovers man while Daley Blind – for all his qualities – is not strong or imposing enough to form the kind of defence that will keep the best striker’s at bay.
Chris Smalling is certainly up to the task, as is Bailly once he settles at Old Trafford, but what United need is a player who has been there and done it; someone who can help the Ivorian through the tough matches and push Smalling to reach greater heights.
Ezequiel Garay would be perfect for United yet it remains to be seen if the long-linked player would finally make the move. But whatever happens in the next month, Mourinho would be wise to sign an additional defender. If Pogba arrives it would be all he is missing.
