Aston Villa lost their final pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday by losing 3-1 at home to Premier League side Middlesbrough.

Roberto Di Matteo's side actually went ahead on 15 minutes through defender Nathan Baker, but a capitulation in the final half-an-hour saw Aston Villa lose out.

First, Alvaro Negredo levelled up on the hour mark, before two goals in the final 15 minutes from another new boy Viktor Fischer and Jordan Rhodes sealed the come-from-behind victory for Boro boss Aitor Karanka.

It was Aston Villa's first defeat in what had been a decent pre season thus far, but by losing to the Premier League new boys it perhaps shows that the Villans are indeed a Championship team - officially and in terms of quality.

Aston Villa fans seemed particularly unhappy with the performance of right-back Alan Hutton, who did not seem to cover himself in much glory at Villa Park yesterday.

Aston Villa kick off their Championship season with a tricky trip to last season's playoff finalists Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday, and Villa supporters will definitely be hoping for reinforcements before then.
