According to the Daily Mail, Everton are refusing to budge on their £50 million asking price for John Stones as Manchester City hope to sign the defender ahead of the new Premier League season.

The report claims that City have already seen a £40 million bid rejected for the player, and despite Stones’ intention to join the Citizens, Everton won’t allow him to leave for anything below their valuation.

The England international defender was the subject of one of the most high-profile transfer sagas this time last year, when on that occasion Chelsea were desperate to sign him.

Now, the Toffees aren’t willing to back down to City, just as they wouldn't with Chelsea, and Pep Gaurdiola’s side know they must meet the Merseyside club’s valuation of the player or suffer the same fate as the Blues.

Stones has been in action for Everton during their training camp in Germany, starting for Ronald Koeman’s side as they played a Friday night match with second-tier side Dresden.

The former Barnsley man also featured against MK Dons in midweek, a sign that Everton aren’t willing to let City’s attempts to sign him disrupt their plans ahead of the Premier League campaign.

Stones, 22, made 33 league appearances last term, averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 3.8 effective clearances per league encounter as the Merseysiders laboured to a midtable finish.
