Rafa Benitez has a decision to make about who will be his Newcastle United number one.

Karl Darlow has told the Chronicle that it is going to be a fight for the Newcastle United number one spot throughout next season.

The goalkeeping position was something of a revolving door for the Magpies last season as injuries continuously hit the position.

Tim Krul started the season as number one but an injury picked up on international duty saw him ruled out for the season.

Robbie Elliot replaced him for much of the campaign after that, until an injury on international duty also ruled him out and Karl Darlow finished the campaign as number one.

He staked his claim for a regular spot next season with his impressive performances, but now faces competition from new signing Matz Sels.

And Darlow has admitted that it’s going to be a fight all season to see who will be number one.

“Matz is good competition,” he told the Chronicle.

“We’ve got some very good goalkeepers now. It’s going to be a fight all season for who’s going to be playing. When I get a chance, I just need to put my mark on a game and hopefully that will be enough to start the season.”

It will certainly be interesting to see who Rafa Benitez picks as his number one goalkeeper next season.

It would be harsh for Darlow to lose his place given the fine performances he put in at the end of last season but there is every chance that the Spaniard is eyeing a fresh start with new man Sels between the sticks.
