Kirchhoff, who can also play as a central defender, joined Sunderland from Bayern Munich in the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old’s current contract with the Premier League outfit runs until June 2017, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

According to The Sun, the German midfielder will open talks on extending his current deal at the Black Cats.

Kirchhoff featured in 15 Premier League matches for Sunderland during the 2015-16 season, creating 12 chances in the process.

The versatile former Bayern player had a pass accuracy of 69% and a shot accuracy of 50%, and won 33 headers, 11 dribbles and 40 tackles.

The former Germany Under-21 international played well for Sunderland last season.

It would make sense for Sunderland and Kirchhoff to agree on a new deal, especially as the midfielder has just a year remaining on his contract at the moment.

The Black Cats narrowly avoided relegated to the Championship last season and will remain in the Premier League for the 2016-17 campaign.
