Things appear to be hotting up for the Toffees in the transfer market...

Everton are closing in on summer signing number 2 in the shape of Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye, according to his current boss Roberto Di Matteo.

"It's public Everton have triggered his clause and he's going to leave," the Italian told the Express & Star. "There's no news so far but the expectation is, once personal terms are agreed and a medical (is done), he's going to go."

So far so good, then. But how's the defender search getting on?

According to the Sun, not swimmingly. The tabloid reports that Everton's bid for Sunderland defender Lamine Kone has been turned down, although the Sunderland Echo insists there has been no such approach, despite genuine interest from Merseyside.

The Sun, however, adds the Toffees' focus has switched to Anderlecht's Kara Mbodj instead, which backs up the Mail's claim from Thursday afternoon. Work permit issues are said to have scuppered a move to West Ham a year ago, though these have reportedly been resolved.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton will offer one of their current stars, Leighton Baines, a new deal.

The report claims talks are to begin immediately, much to the delight of the Toffees' supporters on Twitter.

Something else which should keep them smiling - Galatasaray hope to announce talks for Everton flop Oumar Niasse today according to Fanatik.

However, another Turkish outlet, Hurriyet, claims the Turkish giants are reluctant to accept Everton's insistence of an £8.4 million buyout clause in the deal.
