Arsenal have been dealt a big blow ahead of the new season with Per Mertesacker suffering an injury which will keep him out for five months.

The German's absence means Arsenal are looking for a new centre-back, and the perfect candidate may have just become available.

Liverpool sent Mamadou Sakho back from their pre-season tour after 'concerns over his attitude', and a fresh start could be needed for the Frenchman.

The defender missed the end of the season after testing positive for a banned substance, but the BBC reported earlier this month that the case was dismissed by UEFA.

Sakho would be an astute signing for Arsenal, where he could renew his international partnership with Laurent Koscielny.

The defender is a player Arsene Wenger is well aware of, linked by The Sun with his signature back in 2011 when he was at PSG.

The 26-year-old is used to the Premier League and could settle in, with a big point to prove, if Liverpool choose to sell him.

The last time Arsenal moved to try and sign a player from Liverpool it was 2013, when they attempted to sign Luis Suarez with an infamous £40m plus £1 bid.

There should be no messing around for Sakho, who could be available at the right price - although Liverpool would be advised to sell after the first game of the season - when they visit Arsenal.
