Aston Villa owner Dr Tony Xia admits that the club are powerless to resist, after Everton have come in for Idrissa Gueye.
Everton have met Gueye’s release clause of £7.1 million (The Guardian), and they appear to be closing in on a deal for the midfielder.
Villa have managed to keep hold of most their key players so far this summer, but Xia admits that there is little they can do to stop Gueye leaving.
Yes.And there are several clubs up to him now,and if he wants go,we are powerless. https://t.co/FDVJtJpV4r— Dr. Tony Xia (@Dr_TonyXia) July 27, 2016
Villa CEO Keith Wyness has also reacted to the news on Twitter, by suggesting that any approach for Gueye would not be welcome.
Re idrissa gueye, we do not welcome any interest in this player from any club #fightlikelions— keith wyness (@retsub12) July 26, 2016
Despite Wyness’ defiant message, it seems likely that Gueye will become Ronald Koeman’s second signing at Everton.
Gueye was one of Villa’s better performers, during their terrible season last term.
Everton have not been particularly active in the transfer window so far, but it is believed that Koeman sees Gueye as a player who could enhance his midfield options.
Villa are still hoping to keep hold of their more high profile players, with Xia promising that Jordan Amavi and Jordan Ayew will be kept at Villa Park next season.
