Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has provided an update regarding the fitness status of star man Christian Eriksen.

Tottenham started their pre-season tour of Australia with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Italian giants Juventus on Tuesday night and the loss was understandable as Spurs were without a number of their first-team regulars due to their participation in the European Championships.

However, fans were left a bit surprised at not seeing Eriksen feature against Juventus on the night, especially with the Dane returning to pre-season training with the rest of the squad as he did not feature in France earlier this month.

Now Spurs boss Pochettino has spoken regarding the absence of Eriksen and has stated that the 24-year-old had to be withdrawn from the game as he had picked up a virus.

Pochettino was quoted saying by the London Evening Standard, "He got a virus when we arrived in Australia on Saturday. It was impossible for him to be involved in the game [against Juventus].”

The Spurs boss then went on to state that Eriksen remains a doubt for the upcoming encounter against Atletico Madrid this weekend.

He continued, "We'll see. We will see what happens on Friday and we hope he will be available to play 45 minutes.”
