Everton seem to be missing out on a deal for Benfica's Jardel.

According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Everton had shown a late interest in signing Benfica centre back Jardel - but he's close to signing a new contract.

The Toffees are believed to be in the market for a new central defender this summer, with question marks surrounding the future of John Stones.

A host of names have already been touted for moves to Goodison Park, but a new player linked with the club is Benfica centre back Jardel.

The Brazilian, 30, joined Benfica from Olhanense back in 2011, and has been a key first-team player for the Portuguese giants over the years, racking up more than 150 appearances for Benfica.

After five goals in 44 appearances last season, Jardel now appears to be on the verge of signing a new one-year deal at the Estadio da Luz, handing him a wage increase too, according to Portuguese newspaper  O Jogo.

The same report claims that Villarreal, Lazio and Everton had been keen to sign Jardel, but their attempts look set to fall short as the 6ft 3in centre back gets ready to sign a new contract.

O Jogo claim that, in recent hours, Everton had shown a strong interest in Jardel, but the player has always wanted to stay at Benfica, and would only leave for a lucrative transfer.

It's unlikely that Jardel was a top target for Everton, and more an experienced option for Ronald Koeman, but he already seems to be a name to cross off the list for the Toffees.
