Rafael Benitez has told the Shields Gazette that he intends to give most of his Newcastle United players 60 minutes against Vitesse Arnhem on Saturday.

Newcastle are stepping up their preparations for the upcoming campaign, with their first competitive fixture of the season coming up against Fulham in just over a week.

The Magpies take on Vitesse Arnhem in the final pre-season match of the season at the weekend.

And Benitez said: “We will see.

“We gave 60 minutes to the majority of the players [against Southend United] and we will try to do similar things on Saturday.”

It seems likely that Newcastle will start with their first choice line-up against Vitesse at the weekend.

Benitez’s side have been unbeaten in every one of their pre-season fixtures so far, meaning they have plenty of momentum going into the new campaign.

Newcastle may have been relegated last season, but they finished the season in relatively good form and they have also been able to keep hold of the bulk of their squad.

The Tynesiders are currently the heavy favourites to win the Championship this season, as they aim to bounce straight back from relegation.
