Bristol City have agreed a deal to re-sign Sunderland defender Adam Matthews on loan, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Matthews has been deemed surplus to requirements at Sunderland after being left out of the club's pre-season tour of France and being forced to train with the club's Under-23s in pre-season.

Despite the arrival of David Moyes as manager at Sunderland the Welsh international has been informed he will not figure in the club's plans going forward,

The former Celtic defender struggled to make an impact at Sunderland after his arrival at the club last summer, making just two first-team appearances for the Black Cats.

Matthews spent the final two months of last season on loan at Ashton Gate making nine appearances for the club and Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has been keen to bring him back to the Championship side.

Bristol City have agreed a deal to bring Matthews back to the club on loan for all of next season and the player is currently undergoing a medical ahead of sealing his move back to the Robins.
