Southend manager Phil Brown has told the Chronicle that Rafa Benitez has told him he still wants four or five signings at Newcastle United.

The Magpies have already made six new signings this summer as he looks to build a squad capable of winning the Championship next season.

Further signings are expected though, with the Spaniard likely to look at further improving his defence and his forward options before the end of the transfer window.

In the meantime their pre-season routine continues, with them recently beating Brown’s side 2-0 in a friendly.

And he claims that Benitez has told he still wants a further four or five players added to his current squad.

“He’s just said to me that he still wants to bring four or five players in,” he told the Chronicle.

“You look at the squad there and he can boast what 22 to 24 players in the squad here and every one of them can play in the Championship. But he wants better, he wants to get promoted, he wants to finish first.”

It now remains to be seen if Newcastle can go on to win the Championship next season.

There is no denying that they have the quality in the squad to do so, even after Andros Townsend and Georginio Wijnaldum departed this summer.

The question will be whether they can scrap out the tougher games they will face, with every team in the division looking to take points off of them this season.
