Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez seemed pleased with his side's 2-0 win over Southend at Roots Hall as they continue their preparations for the season ahead in the Championship

Vurnon Anita and Yoan Gouffran were on the score sheet but it seemed to be the clean sheet that pleased the Spaniard the most.

He is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: "I was pleased for the team because we picked up another clean sheet. We conceded just a few chances. In the Championship we have to concede even less.”

Although Anita's strike from distance caught the eye of many, the comments from Benitez are an example of what he has wanted from all of the sides he has managed, in not giving the opposition a sniff as the sides he has managed had a reputation for having a solid defensive base when they were at their best.

It was why he was so successful in European competition as it was a tactical approach over two legs and the emphasis was on sides not to make any mistakes at the back.

It also shows that Benitez does not want to be complacent even after a promising performance, where he was also pretty happy to see his side score as a result of some good pressing.

When Newcastle are at their best during the campaign ahead, expect the side not to give too many chances away, and Benitez will want his side to have the most clean sheets in the league next season as well as the most points.
