Steven Taylor is close to joining MLS side Portland Timbers following his release from Newcastle United this summer, according to the Shields Gazette.

The veteran defender's 21-year association with Newcastle came to an end after failing to earn a new contract with the Magpies.

At 30, Taylor is still seemingly young enough to perhaps be picked up by another Championship club but, according to the Shields Gazette, he is heading stateside to join the Timbers.

If it happens, it would represent a surprising move given that Taylor still has plenty of years left in his career, having only turned 30 in January.

Scottish giants Rangers were said to be interested at one stage this summer but a switch to Ibrox never materialised for the London-born centre-back.

He signed professional terms with Newcastle in 2003, after initially joining the club as an eight-year-old in 1995, but he seemingly did not do enough last season to warrant a spot in Rafael Benitez's side.

Newcastle have signed three centre-backs since his departure, with Jesus Gamez, Grant Hanley and Isaac Hayden all joining the Championship side, though the latter might well figure in midfield.
