The arrival of Alvaro Negredo at Middlesbrough will spur on David Nugent, the striker has told GazetteLive.

Negredo was confirmed as a Middlesbrough player last week, the second high profile Spaniard to make the switch to Teesside following former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes arrival earlier this month.

The Spanish international striker is making a return to the Premier League following his spell at Manchester City, which, whilst starting off brightly, faded after the turn of the year in 2014 when he did not score a goal from January until the end of the campaign.

Nevertheless, during his one full season at the Etihad, he still netted 23 times in 48 appearances in all competitions.

His track record and previous experience has led to a tangible sense of excitement at the Riverside following his arrival on loan from Valencia.

But one man who you would be forgiven for thinking was not so keen to see another established forward in the North East is David Nugent, who already faces competition for places from the prolific Jordan Rhodes.

Nevertheless, Nugent has revealed his looking forward to competing for a place with Negredo, saying it will spur him on.

“Competition for places is great already and there may be one or two more signings to come,” said Nugent.

“It’s going to be stiff competition for places, especially with Alvaro coming in from Valencia but sometimes that competition for places can spur you on a bit more.

“I’m really enjoying training with him, getting to know him and I’m sure he’s going to be a great player for Middlesbrough.

“We’ve made few additions, top quality players like Valdes and Negredo and we have started well in the games, training is really good and we are looking forward to the start of the season.

“We’ve got a great squad here, a great team spirit.”

Nugent found the net for Boro during their only victory in Marbella, where the side have been training recently to prepare for the new season.

The former Leicester City striker netted the first of two in a comfortable 2-0 win over Al-Ahly, with Julien de Sart grabbing the other.

Nugent joined Boro from the Foxes this time last year, and he made 38 appearances for Boro last term, scoring 8 goals.
