According to the Daily Mail (live transfer thread, July 25th 2016 at 16:21), Jake Buxton is set to join fellow Championship side Wigan Athletic following on and off talks over the past month.
The report claims the deal should be completed within the next 24 hours with the Rams eyeing West Bromwich Albion centre-back James Chester as a possible alternative.
Buxton joined Derby from local side Burton Albion back in 2009, following then boss Nigel Clough to the iPro Stadium on a one-year contract.
The 31-year-old soon won over supporters with his passion and loyalty, and it was not too long before he cemented a regular spot at the back with some impressive displays.
Buxton improved immensely with the East Midlands club, forging a decent partnership with defender Richard Keogh which proved the backbone to Derby’s play-off campaign under Steve McClaren.
However, the arrival of Jason Shackell 12 months ago saw the former Mansfield Town man lose his place in the side, and Buxton spent much of last season on the periphery of the side.
New boss Nigel Pearson evidently does not see Buxton as part of his plans this coming season, and newly-promoted Wigan have reportedly identified him as an ideal option.
Buxton made over 100 league appearances for Derby and became a crowd favourite at the iPro Stadium.
