Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino may have raided his former club Southampton already this summer, but it appears as though the Saints could now return the favour as it was reported on Monday that they are interested in signing Kieran Trippier.
Trippier only joined Spurs last summer from relegated Burnley and spent his first season at White Hart Lane serving as back-up for first-choice right-back Kyle Walker.
The 25-year-old finished the campaign with 19 appearances in all competitions, almost half of which came in the Europa League, but looks unlikely to usurp Walker.
Now, it appears as though Southampton, from whom Tottenham signed midfielder Victor Wanyama last month, may be ready to pounce to bring Trippier to St. Mary's.
The Saints were allegedly interested in the former England youth international last summer when he instead chose a switch to White Hart Lane.
New manager Claude Puel could be set to revive that interest as he looks to add to his options in the right-back position and provide competition for Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina.
Spurs could well be willing to cash in on Trippier - £5 million would represent a profit - and given that DeAndre Yedlin could be utilised by Pochettino this term after a productive loan spell at Southampton, they could afford to allow a right-back to leave.
Reacting on Twitter, Southampton supporters had their interest piqued by the rumour, with the majority seeming to believe that signing Trippier for the quoted price would represent a very good bit of business.
Trippier for £5M would be a cracking signing! Experienced and attacking, very good cover for Cedric! #saintsfc— mighty_SAINTS (@mighty_saints) July 25, 2016
Trippier is such a #SaintsFC signing. Quick, young, English attacking full-back which is what we need as competition to Cedric.— ParkySFC (@Parky7471) July 24, 2016
Trippier is so underrated. Great attacking and so quick. £5M in today's market is peanuts anyway - Would get into most PL lineups. #SaintsFC— Charlie (@CharlieSFC_) July 24, 2016
If we buy Trippier for 5 million from Spurs I think that's a great deal! Always liked him #saintsfc— Will Mitchell (@WillsfcMitchell) July 24, 2016
In this day and age £5mil for Kieron Trippier would be an absolute bargain!! #saintsfc— Dan Wight (@danswight) July 24, 2016
Spurs fans, however, were more divided on the potential move.
There's talk this eve of selling Trippier to Southampton & signing Ginter from Dortmund. Exactly the sort of upgrade we should be making.— Chris Miller (@WindyCOYS) July 24, 2016
I like Trippier, but selling him and signing Ginter would be clever business. Especially if Yedlin is sticking around as backup #thfc— Nick Hall (@NickTHFCHall) July 24, 2016
Wow that makes sense, Ginter in, Trippier out, Ginter can play RB and CB and CDM and we still have Yedders— mr. solo dolo (@Cyrus_Sans) July 24, 2016
Hope Trippier doesn't leave unless we get a good fee— Rory (@AlliNutmeg) July 24, 2016
Trippier did have some good games and has a decent cross but he still just doesn't cover the pitch or have good enough awareness for me.— Mac (@Tweetgood_Mac) July 25, 2016
Hope Trippier stays, I don't rate Yedlin higher than him, pace merchant imo— Vin the GOAT (@JanVertongssen) July 24, 2016
