Leeds United should move for Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Lewis McGugan

Sheffield Wednesday's Lewis McGugan is up for sale and Leeds United should make a move.

Tom Lees of Sheffield Wednesday

It has been two years since Sheffield Wednesday signed Tom Lees from Leeds United, and it is fair to say that the decision to let the defender leave Elland Road has been shown up as a poor one.

Lees has shone at Wednesday, and progressed into a wonderful centre-back at Championship level.

At the age of 25, Lees plays a key role for Wednesday - and he would surely be a better option than any of the central defenders which Leeds currently have at their disposal.

It is a transfer the Whites are likely to regret sanctioning, but Leeds have an opportunity to make amends for that deal by completing a move for Lewis McGugan this summer.

Carlos Carvalhal has deemed McGugan surplus to requirements (Sheffield Star), after suggesting that the attacking midfielder cannot fit in to his style of play at Hillsborough.

Wednesday are now looking to sell McGugan for a cut price, as they aim to get him off their books.

McGugan barely featured last season, but his quality at Championship level is undoubted and he would fit in well at Elland Road.

Leeds need an addition to cover for the void that Lewis Cook’s departure has left, and signing a player of McGugan’s quality would go some way to making up for the England youth international’s departure.

McGugan has an excellent range of passing, and he has also shown a happy knack of hitting the back of the net.

McGugan scored five goals in 15 games for Wednesday last season, despite playing infrequently, and he looks ready for a regular starting role.

If McGugan was brought to Leeds, he would surely go straight into their first-choice line-up - and he would be a player with the quality needed to fire Garry Monk’s side into top six contention. He could even turn out to be just as big a bargain for Leeds, as Lees has proven to be for Wednesday.
