Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu has told The Chronicle that manager Rafael Benitez will "definitely" win promotion back to the Premier League.

The Magpies are set for a stint in the Championship this season after Benitez - who only replaced Steve McClaren at the end of March - failed to keep them in the top flight.

Newcastle have lost six players since their demotion, with at least two of those being very important as it remains to be seen how they cope without Georginio Wijnaldum and Andros Townsend, easily two of United's better players last term

That being said, Benitez has also signed six new players and the Spanish manager might have an extra £25 million to play around with following Wijnaldum's move to Liverpool.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid coach is comfortably the most decorated manager in the Championship, having won Champions League and Liga titles during his illustrious career, and Mbabu seems certain that the 56-year-old will inspire the North-East club to promotion.

“We have to get back in the Premier League - that’s where we belong,” he said to The Chronicle.

“We can do it, definitely. It’s really exciting for us right now with the manager in charge.

“He will definitely take us back up and we will do really well under him.”

Newcastle kick off their Championship season on August 5 with a trip to London side Fulham.
