Daryl Murphy celebrates after scoring the second goal for Ipswich

According to the Irish Sun, Newcastle United are considering a move for Ipswich Town’s Daryl Murphy.

The 33-year-old has a terrific record in the Championship, topping the scoring charts in the division during the 2014/15 campaign as the Tractor Boys made the play-offs come the end of the season.

Newcastle will be targeting an automatic promotion spot this coming season, and if they want experience to help push them along then Murphy would represent a good option.

Murphy, a Republic of Ireland international, is entering the final year of his contract at Portman Road and as such could be available for a cut price should the Magpies press ahead with their reported interest.

Newcastle's Moussa Sissoko in action with Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen

In other news, Moussa Sissoko is still waiting for confirmation over his future as the midfielder eyes a shock move to Spanish giants Real Madrid ahead of the new season, the Chronicle reports.

The France international has made it abruptly clear that he wants to leave St. James’ Park this summer to play in a top league, but so far Newcastle’s valuation of him is proving a stumbling block.

The Magpies are said to rate their midfielder at a whopping £35 million.

Newcastle's Georginio Wijnaldum shoots

One star player who has left the club in the past couple of days is Georginio Wijanldum, with the Holland international joining Liverpool for a reported fee in the region of £25 million.

Wijnaldum will be a big loss for Newcastle, yet it doesn’t come as much of a surprise and boss Rafa Benitez believes the move was in the best interests of the Tyneside club.

In this case we have lost a very good player. I think though, that it was the best decision for him and for us,” he told the Chronicle.

“Gini was a good player and we allowed him to go to a Premier League club. But for us, the reality was that this was a good transfer but also we have kept a good team at the same time.”

Grant Hanley of Blackburn Rovers

Finally, Benitez has told NUFC TV that new signing Grant Hanley needs to improve his fitness before being selected for the Magpies, saying: “Grant Hanley has just arrived and he needs to improve his fitness.”

“He has been some time without training with the team properly.”
