The Tottenham Hotspur teenager needs chances to shine in the first-team squad.
Most of the headlines regarding Tottenham Hotspur this summer have been regarding who they may or may not sign in the current transfer window.
Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama have already arrived, with Georges-Kevin N’Koudou expected to follow, but who ultimately leaves White Hart Lane could determine exactly how many chances another player yet to make their Spurs debut will get in the months ahead.
Plenty of Tottenham fans have been getting quietly excited about Marcus Edwards for years, but having been included in the club’s pre-season tour and after shining so far this summer, the 17-year-old could be on the verge of his competitive debut…with many more appearances expected to follow.
He may be young but Edwards is supremely gifted – the jewel in Tottenham’s academy crown in fact – and if Tottenham wave goodbye to the likes of Clinton N’Jie, Nacar Chadli and Nabil Bentaleb, it could be Edwards who benefits the most.
Able to play on either wing or as an attacking midfielder, Edwards is ready for the step up and he deserves chances ahead of some of the Tottenham fringe players who have flattered to deceive under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
No one expects Edwards to play week in, week out from the outset. He needs to be bedded in slowly, given chances from the bench when circumstances allow.
With too many players ahead of him in the pecking order that is all but impossible, but with the right sales this summer the Tottenham youngster could step forward and announce his talent to the world.
