Sutton believes Celtic's latest signing is overdue but certainly welcome.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has praised the club's signing of Kolo Toure, after the deal was confirmed by the team's official website.

Toure was a free agent after his contract at Liverpool expired, where he had been signed for the Reds by Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.

Celtic's need for a defender was exposed in Rodgers' first game, a Champions League qualifying loss to Lincoln Red Imps.

While they went on to overturn that deficit and win comfortably in the second leg, it was a scare they may have needed, and Sutton argues Toure's signing was overdue.

Sutton has been heavily critical of incumbent Celtic centre-back Efe Ambrose, and added that he did not expect an upturn in performance from him despite Toure's arrival.

Toure's wealth of experience should be vital regardless, at the age of 35, he was still excellent in Liverpool's run to the Europa League semi-final last season and should be a useful contributor for Celtic this upcoming campaign.
