According to Sky Sports (live transfer thread, July 22nd 2016 at 19:23), Crystal Palace have topped Stoke City’s bid for West Bromwich Albion forward Saido Berahino.

The report claims that the Potters have bid in excess of £20 million for the England U21 international, yet Palace have launched an improved offer as they look to acquire his services.

Berahino dominated the headlines last summer, with Tottenham Hotspur on that occasion in the market for him in one of the longest transfer sagas in recent Premier League history.

The Baggies managed to retain Berahino’s services for the season, yet now with only 12 months left on his contract, it seems West Brom will finally cash in on him rather than lose him for free next summer.

Stoke are looking at buying British this summer as Mark Hughes wants to add balance to his side, and Berahino alongside Bojan Krkic and Xherdan Shaqiri would be a talented forward line.

However, Palace arguably have a bigger void to fill upfront following the exit of Dwight Gayle to Newcastle United and boss Alan Pardew has prioritised bringing in a new striker.

Berahino showed plenty of promise two seasons ago by topping West Brom’s scoring charts, and a repeat of that performance could help push the Eagles back in to top half contention.

With James Tomkins and Andros Townsend also arriving at Selhurst Park this summer, Palace haven’t been afriad to splash the cash and a move for Berahino could see them break their current transfer record.
