Jamie Redknapp has told Sky Sports he believes Sam Allardyce will be a success with England because his ego is bigger than those of the players.

Allardyce was confirmed as the new England manager on Friday after they agreed a compensation deal with Sunderland.

He replaces Roy Hodgson in the role after he resigned following the humiliating loss to Iceland that saw the Three Lions knocked out of Euro 2016.

His appointment has been met with a mixed response, with some believing he is the perfect man for the job and others feeling the complete opposite.

Redknapp is firmly in the group backing the decision though, and says that a an with an ego like Allardyce’s is exactly what the national side needs.

"When you're the England manager, you've got to have someone who is not afraid of these players and will enjoy the challenge,” he told Sky Sports.

"And I think Sam can be that man. His ego will be as big as any of the players, and I mean that in a nice way. It's exactly what we need.”

It will certainly be interesting to see what kind of job that Allardyce can do as England manager, with him determined to prove a point in the position.

He has long wanted the job and openly admitted it, so will now be keen to prove that they were wrong not to hire him a number of years ago.

The most interesting aspect will be what kind of football he opts to employ, with this England squad arguably the best he has ever worked with during his career.
