Aston Villa yesterday confirmed the departure of Carles Gil on a season long loan to Deportive La Coruna, via their official Twitter account.

The talented playmaker leaves Villa Park after just a season and a half, following his move from Valencia in January last year, and there is a palpable sense of disappointment among the supporters.

Gil showed flashes of brilliance during his time with the Villains, most notably his wonder goal against Bournemouth last season, but he was unable to produce on a consistent basis.

The club’s descent into the Championship was unlikely to improve that return, with the Spaniard struggling to cope with the physical demands of English football.

His departure doesn’t necessarily signal the end of his Villa career and Roberto Di Matteo will be hopeful of a reunion with the 23-year old in the Premier League in a year’s time.

A season spent further developing his game in La Liga will do wonders for Gil and will either prepare him for a return to Villa or inflate his price tag if a permanent move is on the cards.

Villa fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Gil’s exit and there was a clear sense of disappointment:
